Our GCSE Students

Meet our course advisors

The Edexcel International GCSE Science qualification is a double award.  This means that although it's only one course, it's worth two IGCSEs.

The IGCSE Science online course combines the study of biology, physics and chemistry to give you a broad-based knowledge of science as a whole.

As you study biology, you'll look at the origins of life and the ways in which human biology operates. You'll also explore the development of species and the effect humans have on the environment.

In the study of chemistry, you'll focus on the Earth, including its chemical composition and the ways in which chemical processes can be used to benefit people and advance civilisation.

And as you study physics, you'll learn about its laws and processes. You'll study the production and efficient use of energy, and you'll learn about the origin and development of the Universe, discovering how the laws of physics impact everything in existence.

The study of science is for you if you want to know how things work, how the universe began, and how life develops. As well as being interesting, it's also integral to many STEM careers.

What are IGCSEs?

IGCSEs are International GCSEs – they’re equivalent to regular GCSEs and are offered in many independent and private schools in the UK. We teach them because they’re assessed mainly through exams, not coursework, so they’re more suited to online learning.

This course will prepare you for the Edexcel IGCSE Science syllabus (4SC0) exams that are held in January and June every year. For exam details, see the 'Assessment' section below.

The IGCSE Science (Double Award) includes material from the Biology, Chemistry and Physics IGCSEs. You'll study the following:

Unit 1 - Biology

  1. The nature and variety of living organisms
  2. Structures and functions in living organisms
  3. Reproduction and inheritance
  4. Ecology and the environment
  5. Use of biological resources

Unit 2 - Chemistry

  1. Principles of chemistry
  2. Chemistry of the elements
  3. Organic chemistry
  4. Physical chemistry
  5. Chemistry in society

Unit 3 - Physics

  1. Forces and motion
  2. Electricity
  3. Waves
  4. Energy resources and energy transfer
  5. Solids, liquids and gases
  6. Magnetism and electromagnetism
  7. Radioactivity and particles

The IGCSE Science (Double Award) course is suitable for you if you're looking to fill gaps in your school education or prepare for college or university. It's the perfect foundation if you're thinking about studying medicine, science, technology or engineering subjects at a higher level.

If you require multiple GCSEs, it's also a great way to get two qualifications for the price of one.

You don't need any previous experience or qualifications to enrol on our IGCSE Science course. That's because we believe in making distance learning - and a rewarding future - as accessible as possible.

If you have any disabilities which you believe may impact your studies or assessments, please inform your Course Advisor before enrolment so that we can advise you on whether reasonable adjustments can be made to accommodate your needs.

An IGCSE in Science will give you vital skills that can lead on to A Level and further studies in science, eventually leading to a career in one of its associated fields. The study of the sciences is essential to many jobs in the health sector and most STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) roles.

When it comes to finding a job, you'll find your Science IGCSE will demonstrate to employers that you have the ability to commit to learning, and have acquired good reasoning and analytical skills - essential in practically every walk of life.

If you're aiming to attend university, you'll likely continue your study with A Levels. If you have a specific course in mind, you should contact the institution directly to find out their entry requirements.

You could also do an apprenticeship, or take a vocational course related to a specific job or sector such as an NVQ or BTEC.

We believe in making learning accessible and affordable for all, so you'll have the option to pay for your course through an interest-free payment plan. You'll be able to get started right away with a small deposit and pay the rest by monthly direct debit. Our plans are flexible, so you can pay your balance off sooner if you choose.

If your company will fund your course, we can help you arrange this.

Speak to our course advisors for more information on our payment plans.

Extensive Resources

Once you enrol, you’ll have access to our Student Community, which will allow you to see your course materials, contact your tutor, submit your assignments and connect with your fellow students.

Your course materials have been specially designed for online learning by experts in the field. You'll work through step-by-step units so you can easily keep track of your progress.

You'll have the opportunity to join a live induction webinar when you start your course. It's designed to help you navigate your way around the student community, to offer you help and support, and most importantly to give you a warm and friendly welcome to ICS Learn. We usually hold one a week, and you can attend any one that suits you.

You’ll have access to a huge range of resources that will aid your studies, including:

  1. Interactive Resources
  2. Progress Checks
  3. Peer Discussions
  4. Personal Journal
  5. Awarding Body Resources

Unlimited Support

You’ll be assigned an expert academic tutor who'll be with you from enrolment to graduation. Their support is unlimited and you can contact them by phone or via the Student Community. They’ll answer any questions you have about coursework, study materials, and assessments, and help you work through any part of the course you’re stuck with.

They’ll also give you test papers and mock exams to ensure you’re ready to pass your exams. All your papers will be given constructive feedback so you know exactly what your strengths are and what you can improve.

Our dedicated student support team will be on hand to assist you with administrative tasks, using the Student Community, and any other non-academic queries you may have.

The last exam opportunity for this course is January 2019.

We'll offer a new version of the course in Summer 2018, with a first exam point of Summer 2019. For more information, please get in touch with our GCSE advisors.

Practice Tests

You'll have test papers within your study materials that'll allow you to track your progress and assess any areas which need extra work. They don't count towards your exam grade.

External Assessment

Exams are set nationally by Edexcel. You'll complete three exams for your IGCSE in Science:

  1. Biology Paper 1: 4SC0/1B - Written Paper - 2 hours
  2. Chemistry Paper 2: 4SC0/1C - Written Paper - 2 hours
  3. Physics Paper 3: 4SC0/1P - Written Paper - 2 hours

The papers will consist of short-answer, structured questions which are designed to allow students of every level of ability to show their knowledge.

Important Exam Information

Please note that you're responsible for making your own exam arrangements. We'll remind you when it's time to do this, and you'll arrange to sit your exams as a private candidate at a local school or college. The school or college will charge a fee for this.

Find out more about arranging your exams here.

Exam fees aren't included in your course fees, as they'll be paid directly to the exam centre. The cost will vary depending on the centre you choose, with private schools and colleges being more expensive than state schools.

Find out more about arranging your exams here, or speak to one of our course advisors. We're happy to help!
