Payroll Course FAQs

The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) is the largest global bookkeeping organisation, offering industry-standard bookkeeping and payroll training that employers widely recognise.

Designed to teach practical, job-ready skills that can help you start or progress in your career, ICB courses typically cover areas like financial records, payroll processes, tax compliance, and accounting software.

If you're looking to start or advance your career in payroll, our online ICB payroll courses – powered by Sage – combine industry-recognised training and software ideal for modern professionals.

You can study 100% online, at your own pace – from anywhere in the world, while gaining the skills employers value.

Sage is a leading global provider of business software used by companies around the world to manage tasks like accounting, payroll, and financial reporting.

Many organisations around the world rely on Sage software to process employee pay, calculate tax, and keep up-to-date payroll records.

With Sage being so widely used in the finance industry, learning how to use Sage payroll software is a particularly valuable skill when starting your career.

Since employers often look for candidates who are already familiar with payroll systems, an ICB and Sage payroll course gives you a major leg up.

Yes! Payroll is a great career choice, as it's a profession where finance, HR and technology come together to keep businesses running with confidence, care, and precision.

As you get started in entry-level roles, like Payroll Administrator or Payroll Assistant, you'll develop skills in data, compliance, systems, and communication that are valued across industries.

As you develop, so do your options. Payroll professionals often move into leadership or management, earning an average of £41,000 per annum – with some choosing to specialise in areas such as global payroll.

And the scope of the profession continues to expand.

With automation and AI now supporting routine tasks, the profession is evolving rapidly. Payroll professionals are now expanding their roles, focusing less on transactional tasks and more on strategic, data-driven work that influences wider business decisions and improves how organisations operate.

So, if you enjoy working with numbers, problem-solving, and playing a meaningful role in how businesses operate, a career in payroll can be incredibly rewarding.

Yes! Gaining a payroll qualification can definitely be worth it if you’re interested in working in finance, HR, or business administration.

With payroll being an essential function in every organisation, businesses are always looking for people who understand how to manage payroll processes and stay compliant with tax and employment legislation.

This means that payroll training not only helps you develop your career but also offers you practical, job-ready skills. Among other things, you’ll learn how to:

  • Calculate pay
  • Manage statutory deductions
  • Keep accurate payroll records

If you’re looking to start a career in payroll or strengthen your skills in finance or accounting, gaining a recognised payroll qualification can help demonstrate your knowledge and give you confidence working with real payroll systems.

In short, a payroll course can be a practical investment if you want to build a stable career with great pay and opportunities to grow and specialise in finance or payroll.

You don’t always need formal qualifications to start working in payroll, but having payroll training or a recognised payroll qualification can make it much easier to get started and progress in the field.

Many people begin their payroll career in entry-level roles such as Payroll Administrator, Payroll Assistant, or Finance Assistant, where they learn the basics of payroll processes and payroll software on the job.

However, employers often look for candidates who already understand key areas such as payslips, tax deductions, and payroll legislation.

Enrolling on an accredited payroll course is a great way to build these skills and demonstrate your knowledge to employers.

That's where ICB payroll courses powered by Sage come in, combining professional training with practical experience using payroll software that businesses can rely on:

As you progress, you'll be able to progress to more senior roles in the field.

The best payroll course for you usually depends on your current experience and what you want to achieve in your career.

Whether you’re completely new to payroll or looking to develop more advanced skills, our online payroll courses are designed to support you at each stage:

Ultimately, the best payroll course is one that matches your experience level, career goals, and preferred method for learning.

While salaries can vary by role and experience level, payroll offers clear progression and the opportunity to increase your earning potential as your skills grow.

Entry-level roles like Payroll Administrator or Assistant earn between £25,000 and £28,000 per year, on average. However, as you build experience and take on more responsibility, salaries can increase significantly.

For example, Senior Payroll Administrators often earn between £32,000 and £38,000, while Payroll Managers can earn an average of £41,000 to upwards of £50,000 per annum, depending on the organisation and location.

Gaining a recognised payroll qualification and practical experience with payroll software can also help increase your earning potential.

The difference between accounting, bookkeeping and payroll comes down to the role each one plays in managing a business’s finances. While they’re closely connected, each focuses on a different part of financial management.

Accounting

Accounting focuses on analysing financial data and helping businesses understand their financial performance.

Accountants prepare financial reports, manage budgets, support tax planning, and provide insights that help organisations make informed decisions.

To develop these skills, ICS Learn offers the following accounting qualifications:

Bookkeeping

Bookkeeping involves recording a business’s day-to-day financial transactions.

Bookkeepers track income and expenses, maintain financial records, and ensure all transactions are accurately documented. These records form the foundation for financial reporting.

At ICS Learn, you can develop your bookkeeping skills with:

Payroll

Payroll is responsible for paying employees correctly and on time. Payroll professionals calculate wages, manage tax, produce payslips, and ensure payroll processes comply with HMRC regulations.

At ICS Learn, we offer bespoke ICB payroll courses powered by Sage, including:

While accounting, bookkeeping and payroll each have different responsibilities, they all play an important role in managing a business’s finances.

Payroll data feeds into bookkeeping records, which accountants then use to prepare reports and analyse financial performance.
