AAT Foundation

Association of Accounting Technicians courses are set at three levels:

  1. Foundation (Level 2)
  2. Advanced (Level 3)
  3. Professional (Level 4)

Foundation qualifications are the first level of AAT's accounting and bookkeeping qualifications. These introductory courses are ideal for anyone wishing to start their career in this field, or for those who already work in a junior accounting or bookkeeping role and want to support their practical knowledge and experience with a professional, widely recognised qualification.

They give you a thorough grounding in the basics of accounting and/or bookkeeping, and prepare you to excel in entry-level or support roles within the industry. They also prepare you to move on to Advanced and then Professional level courses.

Who are Foundation courses suitable for?

AAT Foundation courses have no specific entry requirements and are therefore perfect for:

  1. Career changers
  2. People with no or limited accounting/bookkeeping experience
  3. School leavers
  4. Business owners wanting to understand the basics of accounting/bookkeeping
  5. Those working in junior accounting/bookkeeping roles

How difficult are Foundation courses?

Foundation courses sit on the Qualifications and Credit Framework at Level 2, or Level 5 in the Scottish system. This means that they’re roughly equal in difficulty to GCSE grades A-C.

How do I know if this is the right level for me?

If you're not sure if this is the right level for you, give our course advisors a call - they'll run through your experience and education to make sure you take the right course. You can also take the AAT Skillcheck, a short online test with multiple choice questions that will gauge your accounting knowledge and tell you which level will suit you best.
