I left school after my O Levels, and went straight into full-time work. Years later, helping my children with their college essays made me realise how much I enjoyed academic work, and I wished I'd studied more.
When they left home I had the time to get back into reading books again - non-fiction was my favourite - and I realised how interested I was in learning about English Language.
Writing essays that I was proud of gave me a great sense of achievement, and it was good to feel part of a like-minded community.
The course was varied and really interesting, and I would recommend it to anyone who is curious about the use of language and also in social themes such as power in the workplace, gender, and child learning development.
By this time I was working full-time in a food warehouse, and although I was tired in the evenings I managed to fit my studies in no problem and appreciated doing something a bit more intellectual.
Work became really busy during the COVID lockdown, and when we were told that plans had changed and we did have to sit the A Level exam after all, I took to carrying revision cards in all my pockets and having them on my workbench so I could revise as I worked!
I've enjoyed the experience so much that I've just, at the age of fifty, enrolled on the Open University Arts and Humanities degree course and I can't wait to get started on it.
