CMI Level 5 Certificate Course Details
There are no formal entry requirements to study the CMI Level 3 First Line Management & Leadership Certificate.
However, we do recommend that you have a good understanding of English to get the most out of this course.
If English is your second language, we recommend you have an IELTS 6 or equivalent, but we're happy to review your case on an individual basis.
In your CMI Level 3 Certificate in First Line Management and Leadership, you’ll study two out of three optional units:
- Approaches to Managing and Leading People and Teams
- Contributing to the Management of Change
- Managing Problems and Decision Making
These modules are designed to help you build practical first line management skills and develop your confidence as a team leader.

- CMI Level 3 First Line Management and Leadership Diploma is the most comprehensive Level 3 option, helping you build a broader understanding of first line management and leadership across a wider range of topics, such as organisational awareness, stakeholder communication, operational delivery and employee development.
CMI Level 5 courses are designed for mid-level managers who usually report to a senior manager or business owner.
- CMI Level 5 Certificate in Management and Leadership is a shorter course, covering two modules. It's ideal if you want to focus on developing your core strategic management skills.
- CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership allows you to choose a wider array of modules from a selection of nine options. It's ideal if you'd like to expand your knowledge and master a wide variety of strategic skills, from change management to coaching and mentoring.

The CMI Level 3 Certificate in First Line Management and Leadership is is broadly comparable to qualifications such as A Levels and Advanced Apprenticeships.
That doesn’t mean the course is the same as an A Level, but it means that it sits at a similar level of difficulty, while focusing specifically on practical leadership and first line management skills.
This makes it a useful qualification if you’re working towards a role such as Team Leader, Supervisor or First Line Manager.
The CMI Level 3 Certificate can be a valuable qualification if you’re looking to take your first step into management or build confidence in a current team leader, supervisor or first line manager role.
Awarded by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), it focuses on helping you develop practical skills you can use in the workplace, including managing and leading people, supporting change and solving everyday organisational problems.
The Certificate sits between the CMI Level 3 Award and the CMI Level 3 Diploma, making it a good middle-ground option. You’ll gain more depth than the Award, but with a more focused study commitment than the full Diploma.
It may be less suitable if you already have significant management experience or you’re working at a more strategic level. In that case, a CMI Level 5 or CMI Level 7 qualification may be a better fit.
