Entry requirements

You don’t need any previous qualifications to take this course.

If English is your second language, we recommend you have an IELTS 5.5 or equivalent, but we’re happy to review your case on an individual basis.

Course content

This course will teach you the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics (1MA1 specification) syllabus.

At your own pace, you'll work through four units that are ordered by difficulty.

  • You'll begin with the basics at Grade 1-3 (G-D) level to give you the tools you need for the rest of the course.
  • When you feel ready, you'll move on to work that’s Grade 3/4 (D/C) difficulty.
  • Then, you'll progress to Grade 5/6 (C/B) topics.
  • You can then choose whether you want to study Grade 7-9 (A/A*) material in preparation for the Higher tier exam, or focus on practising what you've already learned in preparation for Foundation tier.

For full details of what you’ll learn on each unit, download the GCSE Maths course guide.

GCSE exams

Please note that you’re responsible for booking your exam.

You’ll arrange to sit it at a school or college roughly 6 months before your chosen exam date.

Before you register for the exam, you'll choose whether to sit the Foundation or Higher tier paper.

  • If you sit the Foundation tier exam, only Grades 1 to 5 are available.
  • If you sit the Higher tier exam, Grades 3 to 9 are available.

Your exam fees aren't included in the course cost as you'll pay these directly to your exam centre.

Kate Kindlen‘I really struggled with Maths when I was younger, getting a G twice. I didn’t know if I’d be able to commit to the course as I work and am a mum of two, but the lessons are amazing and the support is second to none. I have finally gained my GCSE at 37!’
- Kate Kindlen

Anna Thorn‘Maths was never my strong suit at school, but the course being broken down into clear grades and topics was extremely helpful. I am extremely happy I chose ICS Learn as I have surpassed my goal, achieving a Grade 8 (old A).’
- Anna Thorn

David Nicholls‘I found learning online more relaxing than going to college. There was no travel, you can study when you want, and the support was there from beginning to end. If I can pass Maths (after not knowing my times tables) I am sure anyone else can.’
- David Nicholls

Audrey Lambert‘The tutor support and in-house maths teacher are superb. Melissa has the patience of a saint and no question is too much trouble. I hated Maths at school – now my next goal is A Level with ICS Learn.’
- Audrey Lambert

Roughly 6 months before your chosen exam date, you should book your place at an exam centre to take the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics (1MA1 specification) exam.

Exam centres are usually schools or colleges that are also submitting their own students for the exam.

Edexcel publish a list of exam centres that accept private candidates. This won’t cover every available centre, so if there’s nothing shown in your area, we recommend contacting local schools and colleges directly.

Your exam fees aren’t included in the course cost as they’re paid directly to the exam centre. They’ll vary depending on which centre you choose.

If you’d like to pay in full, you can enrol online using the ‘Add to Basket’ button at the top of the page.

If you’d like to set up an interest-free payment plan, get in touch with our GCSE Advisors on 0800 015 3326.

If you have any disabilities which you think might affect your studies or assessments, please tell your Course Advisor before you enrol so we can advise you on whether reasonable adjustments can be made to accommodate your needs.
