Entry requirements

You don’t need any professional experience or qualifications to study the YMCA Awards Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-Based Exercise) & Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training (Gym-Based Exercise) combined course.

You should be over 16, live in the UK, and have a reasonable level of fitness and gym experience. All filming of practical sessions must take place in a UK gym.

If English is your second language, we recommend you have IELTS 6.5/ESOL Level 2 or equivalent, but we’re happy to review your case on an individual basis.

Course content

The course and assessments are all online.

You’ll submit written assignments and take your theory exams securely online, film practical assessments at your local gym, and upload the videos to your tutor for marking.

  • Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  • Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • How to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
  • Planning gym-based exercise
  • Instructing gym-based exercise

Then, you'll study 4 units at Level 3:

  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health

  • Programming personal training with clients
  • Delivering personal training sessions

For full details of what you’ll learn on each unit, download our Level 2 & 3 Combined course guide.

Sabrina Cham, Level 2 & 3‘I competed in athletics to European level so I’m quite aware of anatomy and fitness, and I still learned a lot. I highly recommend this course. I’m a mother and work full-time, so I needed something I could fit around my life. This was perfect.’
- Sabrina Cham, Level 2 & 3

Reid Hale, Level 2 & 3 ‘Really good is an understatement. The units are laid out very clearly to help people new to online study. The tutor has given me a ton of help, and I love that I can email them at 1am and get a response later that day.’
- Reid Hale, Level 2 & 3

Alicia Wilkins, Level 2 & 3‘The flexibility means I am still able to work on creative projects, look after my newborn and live life at my own pace. I am learning so much and have a lovely tutor. My new career will feel like a lifestyle and not like I am “at work”!’
- Alicia Wilkins, Level 2 & 3

FAQs

Yes! This course will allow you to join the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 3.

The qualification is accredited by YMCA Awards, the UK’s leading fitness organisation. They award over 20,000 certificates each year and are recommended by 96% of students.

Plus, as pioneers in flexible learning for 130 years, we’re a highly respected YMCA Awards provider. Our Trustpilot rating is 9.6/10 from over 2500 independent reviews.

This Level 2 & 3 Combined Course is perfect if you want to become a personal trainer but don't have the necessary Level 2 qualification to move straight to Level 3.

Most of our students choose the combined course, as studying both levels together lets you save money and transition smoothly.

Plus, you don't need to wait til you've finished both courses to begin your fitness career. You can become a gym instructor as soon as you complete Level 2.

You can go straight to the Level 3 Personal Trainer course if you already have a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-Based Exercise) that covers the necessary units:

  • Health, safety & welfare in a fitness environment
  • Know how to support clients who take part in exercise & physical activity
  • Principles of exercise, fitness & health

The standalone Level 2 Fitness Instructor course is ideal if you're looking to become a gym instructor, not a personal trainer.

Still not sure? Our expert course advisors will be happy to talk through your options with you.

You’ll need the following to access and complete your coursework, online exams, and practical assessments:

  • A computer or laptop with internet access
  • A webcam and microphone
  • A printer and scanner
  • A smartphone, tablet or camera that shoots video
  • Access to a UK gym
  • Authorisation to film within the gym
  • A gym buddy (with access to your gym) to participate in practical sessions

While you're completing Level 2, you'll need someone already qualified at Level 2 to be within the area while you're filming your practical assessments. This can be your gym buddy, a member of gym staff, or a personal trainer.

For Level 3, you'll need equipment to create client profiles:

  • Blood pressure monitor and cuff
  • Skin-fold calipers
  • BMI monitor
  • CV fitness testing (such as step test app)

These can be borrowed from your gym or purchased if not available.

For a full list of the equipment your gym needs to have, download our Level 2 & 3 Combined course guide.
