Entry requirements

To study this CIPD Advanced Level 7 course, you should have significant HR experience or an HR degree.

As the qualification is equivalent to a Master's degree, you should be prepared to take on postgraduate-level study.

If English is your second language, we recommend you have an IELTS 6.5/ESOL Level 2 or equivalent, but we're happy to review your case on an individual basis.

Course content

The course is fully online. It's assessed through written assignments and two in-person exams.

You’ll study all 4 core units, then your choice of 4 optional units.

As a rough guide, Level 3 is for those with no or minimal HR experience. It’s perfect if you’re looking for your first HR role.

Level 5 is for those with some HR experience who are looking for a mid-level HR role. It’s also suitable if you’re new to HR but have a degree and want to begin your learning at a higher level.

Level 7 is for those with significant HR experience or an HR degree who are ready to take on postgraduate-level study. It’ll prepare you for strategic senior HR roles.

Diploma, Certificate and Award indicate the length and scope of your CIPD qualification.

At each CIPD Level, there is a Diploma, a Certificate, and a variety of Awards.

  • CIPD Diplomas are the most comprehensive and desirable CIPD qualifications, covering everything you need to know to excel in your career. Most students choose the Diploma.
  • CIPD Certificates are shorter qualifications, covering only essential units from the Diploma.
  • CIPD Awards are bite-sized courses covering one unit from the Diploma.

Diplomas and Certificates give you CIPD professional membership; Awards don’t.

There are two in-person exams for this course. You'll sit them at at your nearest CIPD assessment venue.

You'll also submit a variety of written assignments online, including a skills portfolio and a management research report. Each will be between 1000 and 7500 words. They’ll be marked by your tutor and verified by CIPD.

If you would prefer to be assessed solely online, you could study the shorter CIPD Level 7 Certificate. It allows you to omit the modules that are assessed by exam: HRM in Context and Leading, Managing and Developing People.
