The CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma in HR Management is the most comprehensive and advanced HR qualification offered by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). It's equivalent to a Master's degree. 

This fully online course is perfect if you're in a personnel management or strategy role and want to build on your knowledge. It will prepare you to take on roles such as Head of HR and develop and implement HR policy at the highest level.

A Level 7 CIPD qualification is also ideal if you aspire to become a Chartered Member of CIPD, as it'll set you on the pathway to Chartered Member (MCIPD) or Chartered Fellow (FCIPD) status.

You'll gain a deep understanding of the environment and contexts within which HR practitioners, management and workers interact, and become familiar with current research on approaches to human resource management and development.

You'll also have the option of specialising in key areas such as employment law, talent development, organisational design and reward management.

Entry requirements

This is an Advanced Level 7 course, so you should have a good level of HR experience and be prepared to undertake postgraduate-level study. A degree-based educational background would also be beneficial.

The Advanced Diploma in HR Management is ideal if you:

  • Have the responsibility for HR decision-making within your organisation at an operational, tactical or strategic level
  • Are an HR professional in a team or in an HR functional management role, and are seeking to enhance and develop your career
  • Are responsible for HR activities within an organisation that doesn't have a specialist HR function
  • Are an independent or employed consultant who supports organisations in meeting their goals

If English is your second language, we recommend you have an IELTS 6.5/ESOL Level 2 or equivalent, but we're happy to review your case on an individual basis.

Course content

The course is fully online. It's assessed through written assignments and two in-person exams.

You’ll study all 4 core units, then your choice of 4 optional units.

If you specialise in HR development by choosing all three development units, you'll achieve the Level 7 Diploma in HRD rather than HRM.

Key topics

Human Resource Management in Context 

  • This module provides you with an understanding of the principal internal and external environmental contexts of contemporary organisations, including the managerial and business context within which managers, HR professionals and workers interact in conditions of environmental turbulence, change and uncertainty.
  • The module also examines how those leading organisations respond to these dynamic environmental contexts, and indicates how leaders in organisations, and those in the HR function, and line managers with HR responsibilities, need to recognise and acknowledge that corporate decisions and HR choices are not always shaped by managers alone.

Leading, Managing and Developing People

  • This module will familiarise you with major contemporary research evidence on employment and effective approaches to human resource (HR) and learning and development (L&D) practice.
  • Research focusing on the links between people management practices and positive organisational outcomes is covered, as is research that highlights major contemporary changes and developments in practice.
  • The module also introduces you to major debates about theory and practice in the specific fields of leadership, flexibility and change management, the aim being to help you become an effective manager as well as an effective HR specialist, managing others fairly and effectively and increasing levels of engagement, commitment, motivation and performance.

Developing Skills for Business Leadership 

  • This module is primarily concerned with the development of your skills, and specifically seeks to develop and improve a range of definable skills that are pivotal to successful management practice and to effective leadership. These include thinking and decision-making skills, the management of financial information, managing budgets, a range of team-working and interpersonal skills and others associated with developing personal effectiveness and credibility at work.
  • The module also seeks to develop further, more specialised skills that are of particular significance to effective higher level people management and provides opportunities for applied learning and continuous professional development.

Investigating a Business Issue from an HR Perspective 

  • This module provides the opportunity for you to demonstrate the ability to diagnose and investigate a live, complex business issue from an HR perspective, to locate the work within the body of contemporary knowledge, to collect and analyse data, to derive supportable conclusions and to make practical and actionable recommendations for change, improvement or enhancement of current practice.
  • The applied nature of the report requires a critical evaluative approach, empirical investigation and analysis and a combination of academic research and business report writing skills.

Resourcing and Talent Management 

  • This module focuses not just on the practical aspects of recruitment, selection, employee retention and dismissal, but also on the strategic aspects to equip you with the knowledge and skills required for resourcing and talent management within a global context.
  • Skills can be sourced by hiring employees, but also through other means such as the employment of agency workers, subcontractors and consultants, or through outsourcing arrangements. To mobilise an effective workforce organisations hire people from employment markets, which obliges them to compete for talent with other employers whenever demand for skills is greater than the available supply.

Managing Employment Relations 

  • The module provides opportunities for you to critically apply the activities, knowledge and behavioural competencies required for managing employment relations practices in union and non-union, small and large, private, public and indigenous and multinational organisations and will enable you to review and critically evaluate the roles and functions of different stakeholders in employment relations and the structures and processes required to manage the employment relationship effectively.
  • You will also be able to assess the impact of contextual changes on employment relations practices and organisational performance from a managerial perspective and gain insights into the creation and implementation of effective employment relations procedures and policies.

Learning and Talent Development 

  • This module will help you develop a critical understanding of the potential and limitations of the contribution of learning and talent development policies and strategies to formulating and achieving objectives at national, organisational, group and individual levels and will enable the development of intellectual, social, professional and personal skills to perform effectively in associated professional roles.
  • The module requires you to reflect critically on theory and practice from an ethical and professional standpoint, explores the implications for professional practice, and provides opportunities for applied learning and continuous professional development.

Reward Management

  • This module examines total rewards in an organisational and international context and provides you with the knowledge and understanding of environments in which reward professionals plan, implement and evaluate employee reward policies to support strategic organisational goals.
  • You will acquire both theoretical and normative understanding of the diverse approaches to reward management and be able to critically reflect on the strengths and limitations of these approaches in promoting individual and organisational performance in a fair, reasonable and equitable way.

Employment Law

  • The purpose of this module is to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to brief organisations on the consequences of current and future developments in employment law, and to give up-to-date, timely and accurate advice concerning the practical application of legal principles at work in different jurisdictions.
  • The module will provide you with the key principles that underpin UK (or Irish) and EU employment law, their purpose, the major defences that employers are able to deploy when defending cases, and the potential organisational costs and reputational risks associated with losing them.

Leadership and Management Development

  • Leadership and Management Development is about enhancing the capacity of organisations, and the people within them to better achieve their purpose in a business. LMD is a massive industry, organisations collectively spend a lot of money on this activity per annum, therefore, if it is done well, it can make a massive different to the running of an organisation.
  • This module will walk you through the literature of LMD, the key academic theories and various exercises to ensure that you complete this section of your qualification with a strong understanding of how LMD can be used effectively.

Organisational Design and Organisational Development

  • Organisational design is the process of strategically aligning the structure of the business in line with the ultimate aim, goal and mission of a business. It heavily involves change management and identifying how it can be successfully implemented in order to achieve success.
  • OD on the other hand aims to improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of a business focusing on structure and culture. This valuable module will therefore provide a high-level strategic overview of the key areas that you need to know in order to help build your knowledge on ODD.

There are two in-person exams for this course. You'll sit them at at your nearest CIPD assessment venue.

You'll also submit a variety of written assignments online, including a skills portfolio and a management research report. Each will be between 1000 and 7500 words. They’ll be marked by your tutor and verified by CIPD.

You'll complete practice assessments that'll be marked by your tutor, so you'll be fully prepared for your final CIPD assessments.

If you would prefer to be assessed solely online, you could study the shorter CIPD Level 7 Certificate. It allows you to omit the modules that are assessed by exam: HRM in Context and Leading, Managing and Developing People.
