Our AAT Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping is a short online course which’ll give you essential bookkeeping skills, including double-entry bookkeeping and Trial Balance standard.

You don’t need any prior experience or qualifications, so it’s perfect if you’re in or seeking an entry-level bookkeeping role. It’ll also suit you if you’re just starting out on your accountancy career, or if you want to bring practical bookkeeping knowledge to your current position.

The course is accredited by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), the UK’s largest professional body for accounting technicians, so it’s internationally recognised and sought-after by employers.

It's highly flexible, so you can set your own timetable and study at your own pace. You can get started right away with a small deposit, and pay the rest with an interest-free payment plan.

Plus, you’ll be supported throughout your studies by your professional AAT tutor and our excellent student support team.

That’s why our AAT pass rate is a brilliant 96%.

If you need more comprehensive accounting skills, have a look at our AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting, which also covers bookkeeping.

The AAT Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping (AQ2016 Syllabus) is worth 16 UCAS credits. It sits on the Qualifications and Credit Framework at Level 2, or Level 5 in the Scottish system.

This course has a Total Qualification Time (TQT) value of 160 hours. The TQT is a measure of how long it will take to complete a qualification and includes the Guided Learning Hours as well as any unsupervised learning and time spent on independent research.

To achieve the AAT Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping, you need to complete two units:

Bookkeeping transactions

  1. Understand financial transactions within a bookkeeping system
  2. Process customer transactions
  3. Process supplier transactions
  4. Process receipts and payments
  5. Process transactions through the ledgers to the trial balance

Bookkeeping controls

  1. Understand payment methods
  2. Understand controls in a bookkeeping system
  3. Use control accounts
  4. Use the journal
  5. Reconcile a bank statement with the cash book

You don't need any prior qualifications to enrol on the AAT Foundation Bookkeeping course, so it's perfect if you have no or minimal accounting experience. It'll qualify you for a number of bookkeeping and accountancy jobs and provide progression to AAT study at higher levels.

You should have reasonable numeracy and communication skills and an interest in business and finance.

You must be over 19, and if English isn't your first language, you'll need an IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent.

Please note that if you have a criminal record or have been made bankrupt, AAT may not accept you as a member. This means you won't be able to sit your exams. If you're unsure, please contact AAT directly for advice.

Not sure which course is right for you? Complete the AAT Skillcheck. It's a short online test with a series of multiple-choice questions that takes 30 minutes to complete, and it'll suggest the level that would suit you best.

The AAT Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping will prepare you to take on entry-level bookkeeping and accounts roles, such as:

  1. Accounts Administrator
  2. Accounts Clerk
  3. Clerical Assistant
  4. Trainee Bookkeeper
  5. Finance Assistant

You can either pay for your course in full or opt for an interest-free payment plan. You'll pay a small deposit and the rest by monthly direct debit. Our plans are flexible, so you can extend the terms or pay your balance off sooner if you choose.

They’ll answer questions about coursework, study materials, assessments and exams, and help you work through any part of the course you’re stuck with. All your work will be given constructive feedback so you know exactly what your strengths are and what you can improve.

You'll complete practice tests for each unit which you'll have to pass before you sit the real thing. The practice tests won't count towards your final qualification - they're there to make sure you're well-prepared, and aware of any areas that you need to work on.
