The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) is the UK’s leading professional body offering skills-based accountancy and financial accounting training.

It has over 124,000 members worldwide and their prestigious qualifications are internationally recognised and respected by employers.

An AAT qualification is the perfect starting point for a lucrative career in finance and can set you on the path to starting your own accountancy practice or achieving Chartered Accountant status.

An accountancy career has the potential to take you anywhere you want to go. Whether you want to work in TV, sport, fashion, or for a charity, every organisation in every sector needs qualified accountants.

Finance professionals are in consistently high demand the world over, so when you choose to study one of our AAT accounting qualifications, you'll be opening the door to hugely rewarding and respected career opportunities.

Want to start your own accounting practice or go freelance? Once you complete your AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting, you can.

Is becoming a Chartered Accountant your goal? Your AAT training can be a stepping stone to ACCA, CIMA, and other Chartered Accountancy qualifications, and will even allow you to skip certain modules - potentially getting you to Chartered status faster than the university route.

And if you've got your eyes set on the boardroom, more than half of FTSE 100 CEOs began their career in finance.

You don't need to wait til you've completed your AAT course to start reaping the benefits of studying AAT. Simply putting 'Studying towards AAT' on your CV can help you attract employers and stand out from the crowd and land you a role in financial accounting, management accounting and more.

After completing the AAT Level 2 Certificate, you'll be ready to take on entry-level finance roles such as:

  • Accounts Administrator
  • Accounts Assistant
  • Accounts Payable Clerk
  • Purchase/Sales Ledger Clerk
  • Trainee Accounting Technician
  • Trainee Finance Assistant

Once you've completed the next qualification, the AAT Level 3 Diploma, you can move into roles like:

  • Assistant Accountant
  • Audit Trainee
  • Bookkeeper
  • Credit Controller
  • Finance Assistant
  • Payroll Administrator
  • Payroll Supervisor
  • Practice Bookkeeper
  • Tax Assistant

Once you've achieved the most advanced AAT training, the AAT Level 4 Diploma, you have a huge number of career options.

If you'd like the freedom of working for yourself, you could start your own accountancy practice or work as a freelance accountant.

You could become a Chartered Accountant by joining an AAT fast-track with ACCA, CIMA, or one of the other UK Chartered Accountancy bodies.

And you could take on a huge number of prestigious finance roles:

Yes! You are not required to have any formal qualifications to study accounting in the UK. You can enter the accounting profession and begin studying at the entry-level level, slowly working your way through the necessary qualifications until you reach your career goals. It is recommended, however, that you have a good understanding of maths and figures to do the accountancy basics.

While both a university degree and a professional body accreditation can help you lead a successful accounting career, university degrees are usually more comprehensive and provide students with a broader education around accounting theories, principles, business and finance.

Accredited qualifications, on the other hand, are more streamlined, focusing primarily on accounting practices and developing the skills needed for a career in the industry. Additionally, accreditation bodies tend to offer qualifications at different levels of professional expertise, which can often be shorter in duration than university degrees, helping you progress to the next level of your career faster, depending on your goals.

Accreditation bodies, including AAT, set the standard of accounting in the industry. This suggests to employers that you have the right skills and knowledge to excel in the profession, thereby greatly improving your career prospects.

If you're interested in developing a lucrative career with job security and great advancement opportunities then accounting may be the right choice for you. While an interest in mathematics and finance is required to excel in this profession, being highly organised and able to handle a heavy workload is also advantageous for a career in finance.

Before deciding which career path to follow, we highly recommend that you do your own research to identify the skills and personality traits to succeed. This will help you make an informed decision before fully committing.

Yes! You don’t require any background knowledge or experience to study accounting. If you have little to no experience, it's worth taking a look at the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting and working your way through the different levels until you reach your professional goals.

Read our blog to gain a better understanding of how you can achieve that.

That’s why our 100% online AAT accountancy courses allow you to study at your own pace, allowing you to maintain a full-time job and meet other personal commitments while progressing your career.

Depending on the course level, learning method and provider you choose, your accountancy qualification costs can vary greatly.

However, you can read our blog to find out how much AAT qualifications cost and go from there.

Depending on the course you choose to study, examination types for accountancy qualifications can vary. With our AAT course, however, you will get the opportunity to complete online mock tests throughout the duration of your course, which will help you be better prepared for your actual exam.

As we currently live in a highly digital world, technology has had a great influence on the accounting industry.

Automation, big data and cloud accounting are all gaining increased popularity, so accounting professionals must display computer literacy and be able to operate accounting tools to fulfill their role’s requirements.

Depending on your job title, industry and company size, an entry-level accounting role in the UK can earn anywhere between roughly £26,000 to £44,000, according to Hays UK Salary & Recruitment Trends 2023

There’s a variety of different skills accountants are expected to develop in order to have a competitive advantage in the UK’s job market. Some of these skills include:

  • Auditing
  • Organisation
  • Problem solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Data analysis
  • Forecasting
  • Time management
  • Adaptability
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel
