Empower your team by becoming Kirkpatrick Certified.

Revamped in 2010 to meet modern business needs, The New World Kirkpatrick Model has been among the best-known training evaluation models in the world since its inception in the 1950s.

Kirkpatrick sets the benchmark for effective training, and L&D professionals across every industry have used Kirkpatrick to:

  • Evaluate their L&D programmes
  • Enhance their training strategies using the insights they’ve gained
  • Ensure training leads to real behavioural change
  • Boost their training results and KPIs
  • Prove the value of L&D to senior stakeholders

We’ve designed this comprehensive Kirkpatrick guide so you can learn how you and your team can become certified Kirkpatrick Evaluation Specialists, taking your L&D career and training results to the next level.

The Kirkpatrick Four Levels® Evaluation Certification Programme

The Kirkpatrick Four Levels® programme considers a wide array of training strategies to evaluate the level of skill and knowledge that employees acquire from training - in essence, how successful the training is.

This is based on four levels of criteria that are supported by the Kirkpatrick Foundational Principles. These levels are:

Level 1: Reaction

This level focuses on how happy learners are with their training. This often comes down to their own level of engagement and how applicable the training is to their role.

Level 2: Learning

This level takes place during training and aims to assess what is or isn’t being learned as a result of the training.

Learners are typically asked to what degree they feel they can apply their knowledge and skills to training and whether they’re confident and committed to transferring what they’ve learned to the workplace.

Level 3: Behaviour

Since the third level of evaluation has to do with true behaviour change, it tends to be evaluated a short time after the initial training has been completed.

This is because it’s important for any behaviour changes to be carefully observed, ensuring that the right processes have been put in place to reinforce the critical on-the-job behaviours that make training effective.

Level 4: Results

At this level, evaluation is exclusively focused on the results of training. This means that there are short-term observations and measurements made to make sure that the subsequent change of behaviours at work is creating a pragmatic impact and the desired results post-training.

With the Kirkpatrick Four Levels® Evaluation Certification Programme, the key is to start the evaluation process before you’ve even started the training.

You and your team should know where you are now, what you want to achieve, and what steps you’ll need to take to reach your learning and development goals.

The Benefits of Kirkpatrick Certification

Along with becoming a certified Evaluation Specialist, becoming Kirkpatrick Certified comes with some other notable business benefits, including:

Closing the gap between L&D training and application

Training is only effective in the long-term if there are measures in place to ensure that the necessary actions are being taken after training is completed to secure its success.

The Kirkpatrick Model gives you and your team the power to do just that, ensuring that what you teach sticks and becomes best practice moving forward.

Incredible return on your investment

Becoming Kirkpatrick Certified is what takes your training programme from uninspiring to exceptional – enabling you and your team to provide not only a great Return On Investment (ROI), but an ample Return on Expectations (ROE).

ROE is a process where L&D professionals demonstrate an organisation’s value of training. In other words, it’s what a successful training initiative delivers to key business investors outside of ROI.

With the Kirkpatrick Model, you’ll impress yourself and your stakeholders with the gains you’ll receive from implementing Kirkpatrick’s innovative methods.

Staying ahead of the curve

One of the biggest benefits of completing a Kirkpatrick programme is knowing that you’ve built a team of outstanding L&D professionals who will deliver the ultimate business impact.

Kirkpatrick has been an L&D leader for decades, and their time-tested methodology ensures that you and your team will stay ahead of the curve when it comes to training and evaluation for the years to come.

How to Become Kirkpatrick Certified

In alignment with the Kirkpatrick Methodology, the Kirkpatrick Four Levels® Evaluation Certification Programme offers certifications at three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

The first step to empowering and developing your team is the Kirkpatrick Bronze Level Certification. This course requires no prerequisites and is completed by attending a two-day workshop online or in person. You and your team will explore what each of the Four Levels® measure and how to apply the Kirkpatrick Model to your own personalised training plan.

Once you’ve completed this course, you can move on to the Kirkpatrick Silver Level Certification, a course designed for those who have already successfully gained their Bronze Level. While the Bronze Level teaches learners how to plan, the Silver Level Certification teaches you how to effectively execute the plan and how to report on results in a way that’s compelling to stakeholders.

Finally, there is the Gold Level Certification, a distinction awarded to Silver Level Certified individuals at no extra cost if they go on to present or publish their own training strategies or results that have proven to benefit other training and business professionals.

Keep in mind that in order to become fully Kirkpatrick Certified, you don’t actually need to complete all three levels within the programme. Those who complete the Bronze Level Certification are considered Kirkpatrick Certified and go on to do great things within their organisations with their newly acquired training knowledge.

We hope after reading this that you have a better understanding of what Kirkpatrick Certification is and how it can help you prove the importance of L&D to business performance.
