Progress your career today with an online IGCSE qualification

Learn more about how Alison used lockdown to study an online IGCSE Biology qualification to kickstart her career.

I’m 41 years old and I live in Southend on Sea. I am applying to Southend University where I hope to be enrolled on the course FdSc Oral Health Science.

I want to start my course there which begins in September 2021. The course will enable me to become a qualified dental hygienist, a job I’ve always dreamed I’d do one day.

I’m a qualified Dental Nurse since 1997 and until lockdown, I was working part-time. However, as I joined a dental temping agency just before the pandemic hit, I don’t have any work yet until dentistry resumes to a more familiar level.

I decided to use all this time I have whilst not working to my advantage and that is where ICS Learn has come in! I have six GCSE’s grades A-C, but not including science.

I need to obtain a Grade C in science so that I meet the required qualifications for the course at university. I have chosen to study the IGCSE Biology as this is the area of science that interests me the most and it is also relevant to my future career.

In between homeschooling my 11-year-old son, I have been enjoying the biology course so far. I’m finding it interesting and enjoying keeping my brain busy during lockdown. Some sections are even already familiar to me as I studied the heart and the blood for my Dental Nurse Qualification.

I really like the progress checks as I work my way through the course. There are test papers to complete at the end of each module and also two mock exams to complete.

You also have the full support of your own personal tutor which is reassuring to know. Another important factor is that the course is affordable, allowing students the option of paying in six monthly installments interest-free.

I love being able to study as and when it is convenient for me, rather than attend a class at a set time and place with no flexibility.

I will continue to work my way through the course and aim to obtain a Grade A as I am so determined to become a dental hygienist!
