ICS Real Stories: Helen | CIPD Level 7 Review
Helen has worked in HR since the 1980’s but didn’t have a professional qualification. She enrolled on a CIPD course to overcome the challenges of her role.
A career in HR is not what I imagined when I was at school, or even University. I ended up in HR through a graduate role supervising a YTS Programme back in the ‘80s.
Over the years I worked in HR in manufacturing, local government, and for the last 27 years as International HR Director in a charity.
In all that time I never got around to studying for a professional qualification.
A few years ago, I realised that many HR issues I was dealing with were very complex and felt the need for further training.
Our organisation works in 60 countries and many of our teams have over 10 different nationalities, so the HR issues are challenging but also exciting.
Since I travel a lot in my present role, I couldn’t find a provider that would fit in with my schedule, until I came across ICS Learn at the CIPD L&D Exhibition.
The person on the stand was very friendly, answered all my questions, and also gave me a discount voucher!
The HRM Level 7 course seemed to fit best with my previous qualifications and experience.
My employer has been very supportive, and I have managed to complete 6 modules so far by studying on average for 8 hours a week over and above my full-time job.
I have to be disciplined, but because the topics are so interesting and relevant to my work, I don’t find it hard to get into the course materials or writing an assignment.
The tutor support has been great, and most tutors reply to questions and mark assignments very quickly. They have also been available for phone calls when a conversation would be helpful.
I have found the topics covered are giving me more depth and understanding for my role. I even submitted one of my assignments to our Senior Leadership Team when we were preparing for a discussion on Change Management.
I have found it helpful to discuss the issues I am studying with colleagues and to share some of my learning in our peer learning network.
At present, I am not looking to change job but I know that if in the future I am looking for something new that this qualification will be invaluable in obtaining a senior HR role.
For now, what I am learning is helping me to be more effective at work.
I would recommend ICS Learn for value for money, good tutor support and a flexible learning programme.
