ICS Real Stories: Martin | CIPD Level 7 Review
Martin worked hard to carve out a career in HR, securing a Head of HR role with few qualifications. He studied a CIPD Level 7 qualification to formalise his skills.
I left college in 1999 with one A Level following a turbulent year in my personal life. I was very lucky in that, through hard work and determination, I forged a very successful career out in the HR field.
In the time leading up to the age of 37, I worked my way up to Head of HR in a global company.
Despite this success, I was always bothered by the fact I didn't have my academic professional qualification to underpin my experience.
In 2019, I approached my company to ask if they would support me to finally achieve my CIPD Level 7. I wanted to jump straight to the Master’s level qualification because I felt I had the background and drive to do it.
My company agreed and, after speaking to a really supportive ICS Learn rep, I decided to do it.
I received a lot of time and support prior to signing up to make sure I was aware of what I was letting myself in for.
After I started my tutors were responsive to my many questions and I found support in the community online.
Admittedly, it took me a month or two to get my head in the space to really start and when I did, I gained momentum. Just recently I passed my first module with a merit and it has given me the confidence to know I can complete this.
My real-world experience is really showing but I did need time to adjust to writing papers and referencing research.
It takes adjustment but ICS Learn provided me with all of the support I needed and I never feel alone.
I look forward to completing module two by the end of September and the entire qualification some time in 2020. I never thought I would ever have a Master’s level qualification but now I see it's real.
I would recommend ICS Learn to everyone, especially mature students who always wanted to gain the qualifications they didn't get when they were younger.
When I have the result I want, I'll feel even more confident in my role and more confident in the profession.
