Retired Police Officer Andy Thom wanted to keep active and still work with people, so he decided to study our Level 2 Fitness Instructor course online.

I chose to go into the fitness industry as I’ve recently retired from the emergency services and wanted another job where I worked with groups of people, was not office-bound and had an element of physical activity in it.

I use my local gym regularly and an opportunity came up to work there with their gym team. Although I was a PTI in the police, my qualification wasnt recognised by YMCA as I had completed it some 30 years ago! And, rightly so, my gym required a formal qualification.

I needed to do an online course as I couldn’t commit to giving up weekends or travelling to London to do a course.

I went online and ICS Learn offered a course that could be done completely online and from home. Furthermore, my local gym agreed for the filming aspect to be carried out on their premises.

To begin with, I struggled with the layout of the website and navigating within the format. This was mainly because I didn’t use I.T. much or deal with computer systems on a daily basis

However, eventually, through my tutor and the online support, I was coached through the system and able to self-teach.

Also, the process is well structured and laid out, and follows in a sequential order, i.e. you cannot progress to the next stage until you have completed or passed the required elements on the previous stage.

It also allows you to save work and continue at a later date if you have other commitments.

I intend to settle in at the gym and then further down the line take my Level 3 Personal Trainer course, luckily for me, this can now be done by my own gym onsite.

I would recommend using ICS Learn for their Level 2 course.

However, maybe not for people who have to fast-track themselves through it in a few weeks rather than months. Tutors have leave, the website is sometimes unavailable due to upgrades or maintenance reasons, and if you are on a tight deadline this can be frustrating.

However, if you plan to take your time, it’s ideal.

The tutors respond very quickly if you need help or a query and guide you through the assessments. The advice given, especially for the video assessments, was very useful.

So overall I am happy to recommend ICS Learn, they listened to my needs and helped me qualify within the deadline I set myself.
