Xue Bai was looking to boost her career development and expand her professional network. She reviews how studying the CIPD Level 7 Advanced Certificate online helped her to achieve her career goals.
I’m currently working on Vodafone’s Digital HR Transformation Programme, which improves and digitalises this multinational business’ employee experience.
As a Global HR Process Transformation Lead, my role is to develop and deploy global HR processes and procedures to support the company’s transition to a new cloud-based HR solution.
I graduated with my Master’s degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Glasgow in 2011. Since then I have worked in various HR roles in both Europe and Asia – and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
When I moved back to the UK a few years ago, I was looking to fuel my career development and expand my professional network. CIPD was the obvious choice. They are globally recognised qualifications with an influential network attached.
Having assessed my experience and expectations, I decided to go for the Level 7 Advanced Certificate in HRM, which I believed would benefit my progression.
Balancing work and life whilst studying is never an easy task. ICS Learn provides the perfect solution as it gave me the flexibility to study as-and-when, without committing to classrooms every week.
I could choose which modules to study first, and at what pace I do my assignments. All resources were online and easy to access from anywhere. I certainly got a lot of reading done while I was travelling!
My tutors were also very experienced and resourceful. They not only supported me throughout my assignments, but also provided useful insight to practical problems and career guidance.
However, distance learning does require discipline. Time slips without notice… I believe everyone has been there. The key is to find a solution that suits your way of learning. I’m a very task-orientated person, therefore it’s important that I set myself goals, stuck to the plan and worked towards it.
Confidence will gradually build up while you achieve each set of milestones. The support from people around you is very important as well, and I’m very lucky in that respect.
My study also involved me with groups of people who shared the same passion. Through the ICS Learn workshops, I met fellow students and we learnt from each other’s experiences. [Please note that all workshops are now fully online.]
CIPD’s conferences bring together the HR professionals across the country where we exchanged our ideas. The People Management magazine, PM daily mail push, and CIPD local branch regular meet-ups keep me informed of the latest thinking and trends within HR practice.
Now I have completed all my modules and achieved a Merit in my exam, I can already see myself applying what I learnt into practice.
