Currently studying: CIPD Level 3 Certificate in HR Practice

Why ICS? The customer service and support she received from ICS when researching distance learning providers.

Charlotte loves working with people. As a Human Resources Assistant, she likes being able to support her colleagues and work within her organisation to create change. Her short-term career goal is to become an HR Advisor or HR Executive in the next two years.

Down the road, Charlotte hopes to progress to a management role, supporting and training fellow HR colleagues that started out like she did. She would also like to specialise in employment law, an aspect of human resources that she finds particularly interesting. To help her achieve these goals, she decided to pursue a CIPD Level 3 Certificate in Human Resource Practice.

"It was all about getting that work life balance right"

When Charlotte first decided that she wanted to earn a formal HR qualification, she had to think about how best to achieve it. Working full time, she didn't think an evening class at a local college would fit with her schedule.

"For me it was all about getting that work life balance right," she explains. "I decided to look into distance learning.

"When I got through to somebody on the phone at ICS, the gentlemen explained to me in great detail all about the company, the course and the payment options. I had so many questions, but he was so patient. I concluded that yes, this was the right course and company for me."

"I want to thank my mentor*."

Juggling her coursework and a full-time job was always going to be a challenge, but Charlotte quickly learned to embrace the balancing act. The support from her mentor and course tutors proved to be a huge help.

She tells us, "I work full time, I study most weekends and occasional evenings. It has been a challenge with a full-time job, but once I get into it, I love it. Variety becomes the spice of life!

"I have found both the support from my mentor, Benjamin Inglis-Grant, and all my course tutors second to none. The feedback they provide is both helpful and so rewarding when you pass. I want to thank my mentor. Even though he must speak to so many people every day, he made me feel like an individual."

"Workshops are a fantastic way to meet people in the same boat as you"

Students enrolled on the CIPD Level 3 course are required to attend local workshops for certain modules. Although she was nervous at first, Charlotte says the workshops ended up being a great way to connect with people who shared her interests.

"The workshops are a fantastic way to meet people in the same boat as you. I really found them beneficial because your course comes alive. The distant learning challenges you to self-teach, but by getting an opportunity to meet your fellow course members and your tutors, you get the best of both worlds."

"I feel privileged to be able to gain experience as well as learn"

As Charlotte approaches the end of her course, she's noticed how much it has already made an impact on her performance at work.

"I feel privileged to be able to gain experience as well as learn. It has helped me tremendously in bringing new ideas into work, sharing with my colleagues and actively promoting change.

"The amount of reading and research I have done as part of my course has helped to hone in my skills and validate them. After nearly finishing my Level 3, I have thoroughly enjoyed it and it has been massively rewarding on a personal level. More so I think than any other way of learning."

"Don't be afraid to reach out if you get stuck"

When asked what advice she would give other distance learning students, Charlotte insists that, "once you begin, it will just start to flow." She emphasises the importance of self-motivation, but also of making the most of the support that's offered.

"Use all the resources available to you, and don't be afraid to reach out if you get stuck. You are responsible for your own learning. If you don't study, nobody is going to call you up and remind you!

"Give yourself a shake if and when you start to doubt yourself, and give yourself a pat on the back when you achieve what you set out to achieve."

 "Bring on next year!"

Inspired by her success with the Level 3 course, Charlotte has decided to continue studying through distance learning.

"I couldn't recommend ICS enough. They gave me the opportunity and confidence to still live my life, work and learn as well. I feel a massive sense of achievement and have decided to start my CIPD Level 5 next year because of it.

"Thank you ICS Learn. Bring on next year!"
