Course Overview

Learn vital health and safety rules concerning car maintenance, as well as roadworthiness requirements.  Gain a full understanding of the main components of your car, as well as the various systems, such as the lubrication system, the ignition system and the cooling system.  Learn to preventative maintenance and gain the skills to identify and repair problems if they develop.  Examine the issue of emissions and study how they can be reduced.

Examine all aspects of health and safety, including protective clothing and the safe use of tools and equipment. Examine the basic road worthiness maintenance checks.

Examine the components of the engine and consider the engine’s servicing requirements.

• Lubrication, Cooling and Fuel Systems

Examine the components of the lubrication system as well as the components of both single point and multipoint fuel injection systems. Study the operation of the pressure cap, the thermostat and the cooling fan. Learn how to maintain lubrication, cooling and fuel systems.

Explore both distributor-less and direct ignition systems. Learn how to maintain ignition systems.

• Exhaust Systems

Explore the exhaust system and the emission system, as well as their servicing requirements. Examine the different exhaust gases and their effects.

• Transmission Systems

Explore clutch operation, gearbox operation, final drive operation, differential operation and drive shaft/half-shaft operation. Learn how to perform routine transmission system maintenance.

• Steering Systems

Examine the components and maintenance requirements of the steering system. Study the operation of the steering rack and the collapsible steering column.

Study the different parts of the braking system and the braking system’s maintenance requirements.

• Suspension Systems

Examine the components of suspensions systems, and consider the operation of both independent and non-independent suspension systems. Learn the maintenance requirements for suspension systems.

You’ll complete thirteen assessments during your course. It is simple and easy to complete these assessments online via the ICS Student Community. When you complete an assessment online, it is marked instantly, meaning that you receive your result straightaway. This allows you to progress through your course without delay. It is, however, also possible to handwrite your answers and post these to ICS.
