Explore the relationship between growth and development. Learn the functions of caregivers during each stage of a child’s development.

• Development Through Play

Explore the different stages of development through play. Discover ways in which adults can enrich children’s play. Learn which toys are most suitable at each stage of a child’s development. Examine children’s drawing and painting.

• The Government and the Welfare State

Explore the role of the Government, the Opposition and the House of Lords. Examine the formation of the welfare state. Study the provisions which were laid down for Health Education and the Social Services.

• Child Care Today – an Urgent Need

Consider why there is an increasing demand for child care. Explore in-home care, family day care and day care centres. Learn your responsibilities as a caregiver.

• The Facility

Learn the government requirements for child care facilities. Explore the different types of child care facilities, and discover the various factors which should be considered when designing a child care facility. Discover how to plan outdoor activity areas.

• Planning the Environment

Discover how to plan weekly and daily timetables. Learn how to conduct activities for children of different age groups which target different developmental areas, from language to dramatic play. Gain the skills to evaluate your facility and programme, and to evaluate children’s development.

• Health, Safety and Nutrition

Discover how to promote good health practices. Study the principles of accident prevention. Learn how to identify symptoms of child abuse or neglect. Explore the proper procedures for planning meals and ensuring food safety.

• Working with Parents

Explore parents’ legal rights. Learn how to answer the questions and concerns of parents, and acquire effective skills for communicating with parents. Discover ways of encouraging parents to participate in your programme. Consider ways in which you can educate parents.

• Guidance

Explore the child’s and the caregiver’s roles in the guidance system. Learn how best to communicate with a child. Discover when and how to discipline a child.

Outline

You’ll complete eleven assessments during your course. These assessments can be submitted to ICS online via the Student Community, or they can be posted to ICS. It is recommended that you submit your assessments online as you will receive your results more quickly this way – in fact, for multiple choice assessments, you receive your results instantly!

• Assessment 1: 10 multiple choice questions
• Assessment 2: 1 activity requiring you to observe children of different age groups
• Assessment 3: 20 multiple choice questions
• Assessment 4: 20 multiple choice questions
• Assessment 5: 10 multiple choice questions
• Assessment 6: 10 multiple choice questions
• Assessment 7: 1 activity requiring you to plan a child care facility
• Assessment 8: 1 activity requiring you to plan activities for children of different age groups
• Assessment 9: 10 short answer questions requiring you to explain how you would deal with various hypothetical incidents
• Assessment 10: 2 activities, the first requiring you to design an advert, and the second requiring you to write a handbook for parents
• Assessment 11: 20 multiple choice questions

Notes

Each multiple choice question comes with four potential answers. Only one of these answers is correct; the other three are wrong. You must identify the correct answer.

Short answer questions normally require you to write between a sentence and a paragraph.
