Course Overview

Gain an introduction to the scope of beauty treatments available, legal issues, health and safety procedures and career opportunities.  Learn the structure and functions of the skin.  Understand the affects of environmental and lifestyle factors and natural ageing process and treatments available.  Master skills in using different make-up products.  Examine nail structure and the process of nail growth and master skills in using different manicure and pedicure products.

Studying beauty therapy by distance learning

The course develops the underpinning knowledge elements of the Level 1 NVQ/SVQ in Beauty Therapy, and will also support you in the development of skills relevant to the National Occupational Standards. You’ll complete tutor-marked multiple choice assessments and practical assignments to test your knowledge at the end of each unit, which will involve taking photographs of your work.

To assist you with your studies, you’ll receive three complimentary kits:

• a Skin Care kit which includes a headband, brush, facemask and sponge plus cleaner, toner and moisturiser
• A Make-up kit with a make-up palette, brushes, sponges and tweezers
• A Manicure and Pedicure kit with nail polish, cuticle remover and foot scrub

Outline

You’ll complete one formative assessment and one practical assignment for each of the four units, meaning that you will complete four formative assessments and four practical assignments in total.

It is simple and easy to complete the formative assessments online via the ICS Student Community. When you complete an assessment online, it is marked instantly, meaning that you receive your result straightaway. This allows you to progress through your course without delay. It is, however, also possible to handwrite your answers and post these to ICS.

Due to the nature of the practical assignments, these must be posted to ICS.

Assessment Breakdown

Principles and Practices of Beauty Treatments

• Formative Assessment 1: 24 multiple choice questions
• Practical Assignment 1: you will be required to interview a practising, qualified beauty therapist or salon owner. You will then prepare a written assignment based on the results of this interview.

Basic Skin Care and Facials

• Formative Assessment 2: 20 multiple choice questions
• Practical Assignment 2: you will be required to demonstrate the skills you have learnt in the Basic Skin Care and Facials unit by treating a client. You will photograph the results, interview the client, and then prepare a written assignment based on the photographs and the interview.

Make-up

• Formative Assessment 3: 20 multiple choice questions
• Practical Assignment 3: you will be required to demonstrate the skills you have learnt in the Make-up unit by treating a client. You will photograph the results, interview the client, and then prepare a written assignment based on the photographs and the interview.

• Formative Assessment 4: 20 multiple choice questions
• Practical Assignment 4: you will be required to demonstrate the skills you have learnt in the Manicures and Pedicures unit by treating a client. You will photograph the results, interview the client, and then prepare a written assignment based on the photographs and the interview.

Notes

Each multiple choice question comes with four potential answers. Only one of these answers is correct; the other three are wrong. You must identify the correct answer.
