GCSEs are the main qualifications taken by
14-16-year-olds in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, replacing
the previous 'O Levels' in 1988. Because they are valued by
colleges and employers they are also studied by adults wishing to
improve or update their qualifications.
Millions of GCSEs are taken each year by school children and
adult learners. Available in a wide range of academic and
work-related subjects, they mainly involve studying the theory of a
subject, combined with some investigative work and, in some
subjects, practical work.
IGCSEs are an international adaptation of the
UK GCSE and have become immensely popular with learners and
teachers both internationally and within the UK.
