Women urged to take IT courses

05 Feb 2010

More women are being encouraged to join the IT sector to bridge a gender gap.

Women are being encouraged to undertake IT courses and join the profession in a bid to increase the number of females working in the sector.

A competition aimed at addressing the gender imbalance in the industry was recently launched by Women in Technology and the National IT Learning Centre and runs until February 15th 2010.

Commenting on the campaign, the British Computer Society (BCS), the Chartered Institute for IT, said promoting interest and instruction in the subject is the best way to bridge the gender gap.

A BCS spokesperson explained that the gap can be overcome "by raising awareness and by providing education".

She added that the Savvy Citizens campaign, which was launched by the organisation last year, "is committed to meeting these two objectives and it is hoped it will go some way in closing that gap".

Thanks to distance learning from ICSlearn, women can not only undertake IT courses, but other programmes including education, social care, business and management training.
