Women catching up with men in pay

03 Feb 2010

Female business and management course-takers stand to get higher wages as the male - female pay gap narrows.

In news that may be of interest to women undertaking business and management courses through distance learning, remuneration imbalances have been correcting themselves over the last few years.

According to a report commissioned by the government''s National Equality Panel, the pay gap between men and women has narrowed over the last ten years.

Between the tenures of 1995-1997 and 2006-2008, women saw an increase from 53 per cent up to of 64 per cent of the median income for men, although a reversal of the widening gap seen in the 1980s is yet to occur.

Commenting on the report, Tatjana Hine, vice president of the World Association of Women Entrepreneurs claimed that the pay gap reduction has occurred through women''s efforts.

She said: "The pay gap is still reasonably wide. Over time though, there have been more women in business and things have progressed.

"If there were as many women wishing to go into the City, for instance, the pay gap would be smaller due to higher wages."
