Teaching has good career prospects and salaries

26 Feb 2010

The Training and Development Agency for Schools has highlighted advantages of teaching.

In news that may be of interest to those taking education and social care courses through distance learning, more than 80 per cent of graduates underestimate the starting salary of a teacher, new research has shown.

The High Fliers poll of 1,000 UK graduates, released by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA), also revealed that two thirds (66 per cent) of graduates believe teaching offers slow career progression.

However, this is not the case, according to Luke Graham, head of recruitment at the TDA, who disputed the notion that a career in the classroom offers limited chance of promotion, as graduates think.

"It is difficult to understand why the public have a low perception of the opportunities for career progression in teaching," he explained.

"Teaching offers more opportunities for career progression than most other careers plus competitive salaries, particularly for those who progress to senior leadership."

As well as education and social care courses, distance learners at ICSlearn can also undertake GCSEs & A-Level courses and other vocational qualifications.
