Care First Careers scheme to benefit people on trade and construction courses

01 Feb 2010

Students who are looking for work after trade and construction courses stand to benefit from new career scheme.

Businesses taking on young people fresh from graduating from trade and construction courses stand to benefit from the government''s recently-announced Care First Careers initiative, it has been stated.

The scheme, which is aimed at helping 18 to 24-year-olds get a job offer, work experience or training, promises to offer £1,000 to companies taking on a young person experiencing difficulty getting employed.

Welcoming the move, Becci Newton of the Institute For Employment Studies said that employers will benefit by gaining an extra pair of hands on a work trial where they can test the product before buying.

"If they are matched with young people who have a real interest in gaining skills and experience things could work out well," she explained.

"I think it is useful but I do think a wider package of support to the employer may be needed too - along with ensuring a good match between young people and employers."
