UK Plumbing Careers

Most plumbers prefer a self-employed plumbing career, although it is possible to be employed as a plumber by a larger business or services contractor. Some plumbers go on to specialise in fields such as heating or air-conditioning for example, allowing them to corner the market in a specific area.

The first route to becoming an approved plumber would be to gain a Technical Certificate. With the knowledge gained during the ICS Plumbing Diploma, you can get a City and Guilds Level 2 Technical Certificate by completing practical plumber training and assessment at one of our accredited City and Guilds centres.

Another route after completion of the ICS Plumbing Diploma is to gain an NVQ. Provided you have 5 years or more plumbing experience, you will be exempt from practical training, and will only have to do a knowledge and on-the-job assessment. Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the City and Guilds Level 2 NVQ in Mechanical Engineering Services (Domestic).
