Examination Fee and Registration

Students will have to pay an examination fee of £21.80. This is payable to the AQA Examination Board. For further information on examinations, please see the Assessment tab.

Students should contact AQA as soon as possible to find out the deadlines for applying to sit the examinations. At this time students should also request the Entry Form for Private Candidates and also a list of centres and details of Open Centres for Private Candidates.

GCSE English Course Outline

You’ll complete four formative assessments, four coursework assignments and an oral assignment during your GCSE English course. You’ll also sit two exams on completion of your course.

Formative assessments are intended to help both you and your tutor measure your progress through the course, highlighting any areas where revision is necessary. Formative assessments do not, however, count towards your final grade.

Assessment Breakdown

• Formative Assessments 1-4
• Coursework: your coursework makes up 40% of your overall grade, and is divided as follows: speaking and listening (20%), reading (10%), writing (10%)
• Exam 1: this exam is worth 30% of your overall grade and should be completed within 1 hour and 40 minutes
• Exam 2: this exam is worth 30% of your overall grade and should be completed within 1 hour and 30 minutes

Notes

In order to complete the speaking component of your coursework, you will be required to record yourself speaking. The recorded material will be sent to your tutor for assessment.

Exams for your GCSE English Language course are held in June of each year. Please note that exam fees are additional to your course fees.
