This module of your home study course in psychology intends to give you an understanding of sociological issues in education.  The sociology of education looks at several aspects concerning the social context of human learning.  This education study looks particularly at inequality in modern urban society and the impact of this upon learning opportunity.

This home study course in psychology begins by looking at the history and social context of education in the UK.  From there, this education study will look in depth at how education is affected by issues such as disability, race, gender and class.  The range of issues covered is intended to demonstrate how broad a subject the sociology of education is.

Home study course in psychology - the curriculum

This module of your home study course in psychology looks at education from several different perspectives.  Your education study will focus on areas such as the 1988 Education Reform Act and New Labour's Education Policies.  The sociology of education module will feature the theories of thinkers such as Marx and Durkheim in an attempt to explain inequality.

Education study - assessment of the sociology of education module

Your education study will be assessed in a two ways.  There will be a number of formative assessments which take place over the duration of your home study course in psychology.  You will also take a summative assessment which tests your knowledge of the sociology of education.

Sociology of Education

This module will give you an overall understanding of the sociological issues in education.  You will focus on the social context of human learning – looking particularly at inequality in an urban technological society.  Covering the history and social context of education in the UK, and various sociological perspectives, you’ll look at how education is influenced by issues such as disability, race, gender and class.

Assessment
