Distance Learning Law Course: Skills for Academic Learning in Law

The distance learning law course is made up of 18 modules, and the Skills for Academic Learning in Law is the first module.

The home study Law degree allows you to study for your law degree through convenient and cost-effective distance learning. The course is structured in small, manageable modules, and to gain your honours degree you need to complete the necessary modules to gain 360 credits.

The Skills for Academic Learning in Law module encourages you to consider yourself as a learner and explore how your learning potential can be maximised to aid the achievement of your personal objectives. As well as forming part of the distance learning law course, the Skills for Academic Learning in Law module can also be studied on a standalone basis as part of your personal development.

Skills for Academic Learning in Law

This module will encourage you to consider yourself as a learner and help you explore how your learning potential can be maximised to enable you to achieve your objectives. It will provide you with detailed information on how to use various legal resources, including Law libraries and online Law journals. The main topics of study include learning styles, stress management and skills development, for example, in the areas of essay writing and critical thinking.

Key Topics

In this module you will cover a range of topics including:

>Approaches to reading and reading law in particular
>Issue identification in problem scenarios – a methodology for identification and planning
>Where to find the law: hardcopy methods, citators, current law, Halsbury's Laws of England, Legal Journals Index.
>Writing law: structuring written answers, importance of learning outcomes and grading criteria
>Where to find online law materials

Assessment

There are a number of assessments that you complete as part of your coursework and forward to your academic tutor for grading and comments.

You'll also take a summative assessment at the end of your module. Exam venues are located across the UK and exams take place twice a year. Please note that there are additional assessment fees for each module.
