Comparative Legal Systems

An understanding of the UK's legal system can only be deepened and enhanced by getting to know the way other systems operate. That's why this module uses specific legal themes, case studies and comparative law approaches to introduce legal systems across the world. You'll put the UK Civil and Criminal Justice Systems in their context by examining areas as diverse as the French legal system, criminal law in Saudi Arabia and capital punishment in the US Legal System.

Key Topics

In this module you'll cover a range of topics including:

  • The Civil Justice System in the UK
  • Inquisitorial v. Adversarial – French Legal System
  • Judicial Activism – Public Interest Litigation in India
  • Post Colonial Africa Constitutionalism – (Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya)
  • US Legal System – Capital Punishment

Assessment

There are a number of formative assessments that you complete as part of your studies and forward to your academic tutor for grading and comments.

You'll also take a summative assessment at the end of your module. Summative assessments include coursework, exams or a mix of both. Summative assessments take place twice a year and exam venues are located around the UK. Please note that there are additional summative assessment fees for each module.
