Skills for Academic Learning in Law   

This module will encourage you to consider yourself as a learner and help you explore how your learning potential can be maximised to enable you to achieve your objectives. It will provide you with detailed information on how to use various legal resources, including Law libraries and online Law journals. The main topics of study include learning styles, stress management and skills development, for example, in the areas of essay writing and critical thinking. 

Key Topics

In this module you will cover a range of topics including:

  • Approaches to reading and reading law in particular
  • Issue identification in problem scenarios – a methodology for identification and planning
  • Where to find the law – hardcopy methods, citators, current Law, Halsbury's Laws of England, Legal Journals Index
  • Writing law – structuring written answers, importance of learning outcomes and grading criteria
  • Where to find online law materials

Assessment

There are a number of formative assessments that you complete as part of your studies and forward to your academic tutor for grading and comments.

You'll also take a summative assessment at the end of your module. Summative assessments include coursework, exams or a mix of both. Summative assessments take place twice a year and exam venues are located around the UK. Please note that there are additional summative assessment fees for each module.
