Global Context of Public Health

This highly topical module addresses public health in a global context. The fact that boundaries between local, national and international health have dissipated – for example, in the spread of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS or SARS – concerns us all.  This module not only focuses on the concerns of pandemics, but also explores broader international challenges such as terrorism, war, food and water.

What does the module cover?

Develop a critical approach to health issues in a global context and the ability to discuss the conflicts inherent in differing cultural perceptions of health.  You’ll critique and analyse public health issues in international, economic, environmental and political contexts and consider evidence-based solutions.  Acknowledge, debate and critique notions, problems and solutions in public health issues in a global context.  Explore how public health practice has evolved and appreciate the relevance of epidemiology; statistics; planning; health needs assessment; evaluation; health promotion; and health protection in public health.
