Research & Evidence-Based Practice

The core module of this course aims to help you find and appraise evidence that you can implement in day-to-day practice.  With this in mind, you’ll learn how to conduct a literature search and be able to retrieve evidence.  You’ll also discover how to evaluate different types of evidence and research, and apply this evidence in daily practice.  Ultimately, what you learn will help you enhance care for your patients or clients.

What does the module cover?

Discover how to carry out a literature search and retrieve evidence relevant to practice.  Examine the relationship between the research process and the development of evidence for practice.  Appraise different types of evidence and evaluate its appropriateness for implementation in practice. Gain the knowledge and skills required for applying research and evidence in daily practice.  And, determine the importance of understanding and appraising policy in relation to evidence based practice.

Assessment

You’ll need to complete a minimum of two formative assessments that you can forward to your tutor for comment and feedback.  You’ll also be required to complete two summative assessments for this module that count towards your final grade:

  • Multiple Choice Question Exam (1 hour)
  • Written assessment (3000 words)

You’ll appraise four pieces of evidence available for implementation in your area of interest. For three of these you’ll develop an executive summary to indicate the usefulness of this evidence being applied in practice. For the fourth piece of evidence you’ll be required to produce a critique.
