Moral & Ethical Issues in Healthcare

What are the fundamental moral theories and principles that apply to ethical issues in health care?  And how does the law apply to these issues?  In this fascinating module, you’ll explore questions such as these – learning to critically evaluate the arguments concerning issues like euthanasia, organ transplantation, fertility treatment and surrogacy.

What does the module cover?

You’ll contrast the main tenets of Deontological and Utilitarian approaches to ethical issues in health care.  Estimate the value, to health care practice, of commonly held beliefs on the meaning and purpose of life and death.  Critically evaluate the arguments concerning procurement and allocation of organs for transplantation. Construct common moral arguments on euthanasia and debate moral positions for and against fertility treatment, surrogacy, and abortion.

Assessment

You’ll need to complete a minimum of two formative assessments that you can forward to your tutor for comment and feedback.  You’ll also be required to complete an essay (4,000 words) from a choice of five topics, as your summative assessment for this module.
