Introduction to Health Promotion

Would you like the skills to empower others to make healthier lifestyle choices?  As an important topic in contemporary healthcare, health promotion draws on a range of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, epidemiology and community development.   Its aims are to change behaviour and create more fairness in society – and through this module, you’ll gain the necessary knowledge, skills and practice.

What does the module cover?

Learn to compare and contrast different Health Promotion models, theories and approaches.  Consider the political nature of health and health promotion drawing on critical thinking.  You’ll learn to apply the stages involved in the planning and evaluation of Health Promotion programmes to appropriate examples.  Gain skills in how to use a variety of communication strategies to disseminate Health Promotion messages.  In addition to group work practice, you’ll also have the chance to reflect on your own values and beliefs, and how these influence thinking and practice.

Assessment

In addition to completing a number of formative assessments as part of your coursework that you forward to your tutor, you’ll also need to complete two summative assessments that will count towards your final grade:

Powerpoint presentation demonstrating your group participation  30%  
(300 word presentation + 700 word write up, including breakdown of student contributions)
 
Invigilated assignment (2000 words)     70%   
The assignment will use a combination of mini-essay questions and case studies.  One of the questions will involve reflection on aspects of learning throughout the module.
