Development of Healthcare
How did the NHS structure come about? What measures have shaped it? Through this module, you’ll gain a better understanding of the structures that provide healthcare, as well as an appreciation of the influences that have created these structures. As well as looking at historical context, you’ll examine and review issues that are currently influencing healthcare provision.
What does the module cover?
Learn about the development of state welfare in the Nineteenth Century, identify the factors which created the NHS, and develop awareness of recent reforms to the NHS. Critically examine early examples of state welfare and assess reasons for change in welfare provision. You’ll participate in group discussions on key topics and have the opportunity to reflect on your skills and knowledge gained.

- The 1834 Poor Law Amendment, the start of public health in the nineteenth century and issues surrounding poverty in the nineteenth century
- The Liberal Government social measures in the early years of the twentieth century
- The development of welfare between the wars and the Beveridge Report of 1942
- The creation of the NHS in 1948
- An understanding of the reforms to the NHS subsequent to it creation
- An examination in detail of the major reforms of the 1990s and those of the New Labour Government

Assessment
In addition to completing a number of formative assessments as part of your coursework that you forward to your tutor, you’ll also need to complete two written summative assessments that will count towards your final grade.
