Who Cares?  The Social Care Mosaic


Whose responsibility is it to care for individuals, families and vulnerable groups in society?  This module explores this issue in depth and aims to give you an understanding of how different agencies and disciplines work collaboratively.  You’ll cover a broad range of subjects, from the links between social care and the community, to working effectively with carers, policy makers, professionals and a mixture of public, private, and welfare agencies.

What does the module cover?

Gain an understanding of the development of community care in Britain and the contemporary mixed economy of provision including the voluntary sector.  Gain insight into the diversity of groups and their needs to which the mosaic of community care must respond.  Learn how to evaluate different approaches to community care, establish the needs of users, and understand how they might or might not be met by the care network provided.  Gain an understanding of the strategies used to empower users of community care.

Assessment


As a summative assessment of this module you’ll need to complete two tasks that will count towards your final grade:

You’ll draw up a map of the Caring Mosaic for a household, identifying the needs which are met, partially met or not met through current arrangements. You’ll give explanations for the map using theories learned in this course, and offer alternative strategies for meeting needs identified. (1000 words)                             60%

Working with a given example of an organisational setting you’ll produce a Reflective Account of how people may experience the organisation (500 words)        40%
