Supporting Children, Young People & Families


What issues are involved in social care needs?  And, what are the problems facing families?  In this module you’ll explore such questions.  You’ll also look at subjects such as the legal framework, balancing the needs of children and parents, the integration of the older generation, and of the communities within which families are based.

What does the module cover?

You’ll develop your awareness of the family as a changing social institution, and look at the diversity of contemporary families and their needs in a multicultural and unequal society.  Gain an understanding of the role of agencies and broad legal frameworks such as local authority in caring for young people under the Children Acts 1989 and 2004.  Gain insights into the concerns surrounding the delivery of social care services to children and families and be aware of conflicts and the need to use evidence to support arguments in this field of work.

Assessment

This module contains two summative assessments that you must successfully complete that will count towards your final grade:

•    Short essay on the role of the state in regulating families (1000 words)    40%
