Sociology of Education

This module will give you an overall understanding of the sociological issues in education.  You’ll focus on the social context of human learning – looking particularly at inequality in an urban technological society.  Covering the historical and social context of education in the UK, and various sociological perspectives, you’ll look at how education is influenced by issues such as disability, race, gender and class.

What does the module cover?

Gain an understanding of key developments in British Education.  Learn to describe and critically analyse different and competing social theories of education.  Draw on your critical thinking to chart the evolution and development of ‘parent power’ and political activism.  Develop your research skills to explore evidence of inequality in UK Education.  Learn to describe how community arts practical skills benefit individuals within a community.  Finally, you’ll discover how social theories of education have contributed to the development of education structures and practice.

Assessment

You’ll need to complete a minimum of two formative assessments that you can forward to your tutor for comment and feedback.  You’ll also be required to complete an essay (4,000 words) as your summative assessment for this module.
