Diaspora Communities in the UK

From its origins, “a sowing or scattering of seeds”, the word ‘diaspora’ refers to any ethnic group that is dispersed throughout the world. Through this module, you’ll examine this phenomenon, looking at the historical, social and cultural contexts of transnational migration. As well as studying post-modern perspectives, you’ll reflect on diversity in British society to consider your own personal views on issues such as multiculturalism and difference.

What does the module cover?

You’ll examine and evaluate the assertion that Britain is a multicultural society, and reflect on the condition of living between cultures.  Recognise the historical and socio-cultural context of migration as well as diasporic formations.  Reflect on difference and diversity in a multicultural society and appraise the role of diaspora communities in British society today.  Examine and evaluate the changing ideas of diversity and multiculturalism in the context of diaspora communities.  Finally, in using practical examples you’ll identify and analyse traditions of different communities, the transmission of values and belief systems.
