Critical Reading & Writing
Now you’ve enrolled on your degree course, this module will help you learn how to study at degree level. By understanding how to critically engage with written texts and learning academic style, punctuation and grammar, you’ll develop and refine your knowledge – and you’ll also discover how to use the Learning Resource Centre. After taking this module, you’ll have all the skills and confidence you need for successful academic study.
What does the module cover?
Gain knowledge to be an effective HE student. Familiarise yourself with our IT systems, learn to communicate electronically and use basic computer packages relevant to your studies
Drawing on critical thinking you’ll discover how to evaluate information sources and make judgments about their likely worth. Learn how to précis, paraphrase, reference and quote correctly, and reflect on and record your own learning and skills in a Personal Development Plan. You’ll also have the opportunity to gain group work practice.

Assessment
In addition to completing a number of formative assessments as part of your coursework, you’ll also need to successfully complete a Personal Development Plan Portfolio (3,500-4000 words) including the following:

- Position Statement
- Learner Resources research using ATHENS
- Text summary
- Text Anthology
- Proof Reading exercise
- Reading Strategy analysis
- Progress Review
