How children learn - early years play and learning

This module of your distance study course demonstrates that play is important to how children learn.  It is one of the most important elements in how young children develop and early years play and learning can impact greatly upon the rest of their lives.

The Play and Talk in Learning component of this distance study course aims to provide you with an understanding of how early years play and learning are linked.  The situation infants are placed in has a great impact upon how children learn, as learning takes place whatever setting they find themselves in.

Observing play and how children learn

This module of your distance study course requires the student to observe children closely and gain an understanding of how early years play and learning shape their character.  You will also look at how children learn in different cultures and consider the meaning of stereotypes.  Consideration will also be given to the role of language in early years play and learning and how it is used for teaching.

Practical early years play and learning

Students are encouraged to share and discuss examples of both good and bad practice and the effect they had on how children learned as part of this distance study course.  Early years play and learning as well as talk will be examined in the context of how children develop and how it shapes their understanding of the world.  Students will also reflect upon their own cultures and what that means in terms of how children learn.
