Play and Talk in Learning
One of the most essential ways in which young children develop is through play. Whether they’re at home, in the community – in fact, in whatever setting they are placed – learning is taking place. And of course, it’s important to able to understand this process. Through this module you’ll discover how to observe children closely – as well as exploring areas such as the meaning of stereotypes.
Key Topics
In this module you will cover a range of topics:
• Students will consider their understanding of culture and will be encouraged to reflect on their own cultures, languages and how these influenced their learning experiences; the roles of parents and carers in supporting young children’s play and talk; the use of observation as a tool for teaching and learning.
• Students will explore the meaning of stereotypes, labelling and expectations; and will be encouraged to consider the impact these have on young children
• Students will be encouraged to share experiences of good practice, which they have observed in a variety of settings.
• Students will look at the role of play and talk, in how children learn and develop understanding about their world.
Assessment
There are a number of assessments that you complete as part of your coursework and forward to your academic tutor for grading and comments. You'll also take a summative assessment at the end of your module.
