Sociology of Childhood

Sociology of Childhood is one of the modules you will undertake as part of your home learning degree. Childhood sociology study is an important factor in understanding young children. The Sociology of Childhood module introduces you to the key approaches to evaluating how society impacts upon their lives.

This childhood sociology study involves looking at childhood in different countries and cultures to gain a deeper understanding of the impact this has on children. The Sociology of Childhood module examines childhood as a social construct and the impact of cultural factors. Your childhood sociology study will also focus on the perspectives of both adults and children.

What is the sociology of childhood?

The childhood sociology study module will examine the uses of sociology in researching and examining the lives of children and the impact of the media, religion etc. The politics of childhood, children's rights and professional interventions will also be covered under the umbrella of the sociology of childhood.

How will the childhood sociology study module be assessed?

The childhood sociology study module will require you to complete a number of assessments which will be sent to your academic tutor. A summative assessment will also be taken at the end of the Sociology of Childhood module.

Sociology of Childhood

Through what you learn from this module, you’ll get to know the key sociological approaches to understanding childhood and young children.  As well as examining different models of childhood, you’ll look at the implications of those models – and you’ll also gain a deeper appreciation of the ways society intervenes in children’s lives. Taking into account the perspectives of children and adults, you’ll look at childhood both nationally and internationally.

Assessment

There are a number of assessments that you complete as part of your coursework and forward to your academic tutor for grading and comments.  You'll also take a summative assessment at the end of your module.
