Fundamentals of Managing People

What are the key HRM issues in today’s business and how do they effect people management and business goals? In this module you'll learn about the complex nature of HRM initiatives and their implications on Human Resources and management policies. You'll also discover the importance of external and internal environments in influencing the choice and effectiveness of HRM initiatives.

What does the module cover?

You’ll learn to apply principles of ‘best practice’ to people management, recognising its empirical and theoretical limitations.  Evaluate the impact of managing people on business performance and the relevance of ‘best fit approaches’.  Recognise the variety of Human Resource practices across organisations and sectors and what influences them. Compare and contrast the best application of practice in different organisational settings.  Finally, you’ll have the chance to practice group, presentational and problem-solving skills.

Assessment

In addition to a number of formative assessments that you’ll need to complete as part of your coursework, you’ll also need to complete an essay and closed-book exam at the end of the module (2hrs 10mins) – each counting towards 50% of your final grade.
