Comparative Legal Systems

An understanding of the UK's legal system can only be deepened and enhanced by getting to know how other systems operate.  This module introduces legal systems across the world through the examination of specific legal themes and case studies.  You’ll examine areas as diverse as the French legal system, criminal law in Saudi Arabia, and capital punishment in the US Legal System.

What does the module cover?

Recognise and discuss distinctive features of select legal systems across the globe. Compare the structure of the legal system in other countries with the UK legal system.  Evaluate the role of history, culture and politics in the development of legal systems.  Contrast approaches in legal reasoning and legal method in other legal systems with that of the UK system.  Consider reform strategies using comparative methodologies.

You’ll complete coursework of around 3000 words and worth 75% of your grade, and an oral exam worth 25% of your grade.  Please note that there are additional assessment fees for each module.
