IGCSE Geography

The IGCSE Geography course will introduce you to the fascinating world of geography, covering study of the natural environment, people and their environments, and global issues.

Geography study rewards you with a body of useful knowledge and versatile and transferable skills, and can lead to a number of exciting career prospects, including environmental and transport consultancy, surveying, cartography, architecture and market research.

The IGCSE Geography course aims to engage you in the process and concepts of geography and enable you to use geographical skills, technologies, enquiry and analysis. You will also be able to apply your geography learning to the real world through fieldwork.

You will learn the relevance of geography study in a changing world and develop an appreciation of the differences and similarities between people's environments, societies and cultures. Geography study will also develop an appreciation of the importance of the location of places and environments, both locally and globally.

IGCSE Geography will also further your understanding of people's responsibilities as global citizens and the ways in which you can contribute to a future that is sustainable and inclusive.

Where will I go from here?

Geography learning at all levels is a key attribute for a wide range of careers and can be useful in seeking employment now or in further geography study .

The IGCSE Geography can provide progression to GCE AS and Advanced GCE level, and other equivalent qualifications, such as BTEC Nationals in Travel and Tourism and land-based subjects.

Assessment

ICS Assessment

  • 3 x tutor marked test papers

External Assessment

  • Exams take place every June
  • The final IGCSE exam consists of one 2-hour 45-minute examination paper set and marked by Edexcel.
  • The single tier of entry will contain a variety of question types, such as multiple-choice questions, short and extended answer questions, graphical and data questions and fieldwork questions.
  • The paper will be a question and answer booklet and students have to answer:
  • Two questions from a choice of three in Section A
  • Two questions from a choice of three in Section B
  • One question from a choice of three in Section C.

The Geography IGCSE course is designed to prepare students for theEdexcel IGCSE in Geography (4GE0) Specification for examinations in June 2012 and later years.

For the IGCSE Geography qualification you will study a range of topics under three main headings.

The natural environment and people

  • You will study topics such as river environments, coastal environments and hazardous environments. Study of river environments will look at the hydrological cycle and physical characteristics of rivers and river basins, as well as the importance of water to people and their relationship with the environment. Under coastal environments you will look at the processes which create characteristic coastal landforms, the ecosystems and human interaction. Hazardous environments include looking at different types of hazard - climatic, tectonic etc) and their effect on people and how they cope.

People and their environments

  • You will learn about economic activity and the factors which affect it, and how increased economic production creates a rising demand for energy and/or energy efficiency. You will also study ecosystems, systems of farming and the changing rural environment, and learn about urban environments and factors associated with increasing urbanisation.

Global issues

  • You will learn about the fragile nature of environments and the concept of sustainability and look at topics such as deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and causes and consequences of global warming and pollution. Globalisation and migration will look at the rise and effects of the global economy, impacts of tourism and types and effects of migration. And you will learn about differences in development and human welfare, with reference to changing global patterns, population growth and political freedoms.

Fieldwork: A number of local fieldwork opportunities will be indicated during the IGCSE Geography course to underpin knowledge and understanding and to learn a range of practical skills and techniques. You will acquire and apply skills in planning and designing a fieldwork investigation, field skills and analysis and evaluation skills. You will learn the use of maps and atlases, and skills with photo-interpretation, sketching and simple statistics.
