IGCSE English Literature

IGCSE English Literature

Studying English literature can help you develop your own writing style and enhance your skills in comprehension and analysis. The IGCSE English Literature course will open your mind to the ways in which language has been used by writers through history, from Shakespeare, through classics such as Jane Austen, to contemporary poetry. Whether you are an aspiring writer yourself, or want to develop your appreciation of English literature, the IGCSE English Literature course will help you gain skills that will prove useful in any career.

In the IGCSE English Literature course you will examine some of the great masterworks of English literature and analyse the styles and techniques of the authors.

You will look at two novels - by Jane Austen and John Steinbeck - and two plays - by Shakespeare and J.B. Priestley - and look at how the styles vary with the eras and explore their themes, plots and characterisation.

Your study of English literature will also see you looking at a range of poetry, from centuries ago and from the modern era, and you will compare the varied forms and structures that exist in this broad and enduring form of literature.

The IGCSE English Literature course will give you an appreciation of the works studied and the ability to gain more from all your reading. Crucially, an IGCSE English Literature will also tell any prospective employer you have acquired reasoning and analytical skills which will be useful in any employment.

The English Literature IGCSE course is designed to prepare students for the Edexcel IGCSE in English Literature (4ET0) Specification for examinations in June 2012 and later years.

Key topics

Drama

  • This unit will introduce you to the study of drama. It is an essential part of the IGCSE English Literature examination that you are able to read a play and apply your critical skills in establishing elements like plot and structure, setting, style, characterisation and other important themes.
  • In this course you will study two plays: Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and An Inspector Calls by the 20th century dramatist, J.B. Priestley. You will learn that there are many differences between the two plays but that they also have something in common: like all dramas, they were written to be performed. This makes them very different to the novels you will study later in the course.

Prose

  • As in the Drama unit it is essential that you can read a novel and apply your critical skills in establishing elements like plot and structure, setting, style, characterisation and other important themes
  • In this unit you will study two novels: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.

Poetry

  • Poetry is a form of literary expression that is more condensed and stylised that prose or drama. In this unit of the course you will read a selection of poems and learn how to apply your critical skills in establishing elements like rhyme, repetition, alliteration, imagery, metaphor and other important poetic devices.
  • The poems studied in this unit are based on an anthology set by Edexcel. You will be able to download this anthology from the Edexcel website and full details are included in the course material.

You can either pay for your course in full or opt for a monthly payment plan.
