IGCSE Chemistry

IGCSE Chemistry

Our IGCSE Chemistry course will teach you a basic understanding of chemistry, as well as investigating and experimental skills based on correct and safe laboratory techniques.

Chemistry is fundamental to our daily lives, and the study of chemistry is fundamental in science. Knowledge of chemistry can be useful in a number of careers, from the oil, chemical and pharmaceutical industries to public health, environmental protection and numerous other occupations.

The IGCSE Chemistry course is designed to develop your understanding of the unifying patterns and themes of chemistry. Through your chemistry study you will gain an appreciation of scientific methods, learn to form hypotheses and design experiments to test them.

You'll learn about the basic principles of chemistry, leading on to the chemistry of the elements, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and the role of chemistry in society.
The IGCSE Chemistry course will develop an understanding of the widespread importance of chemistry and show how the work of the chemist has social, industrial, technological, environmental and economic consequences for the community.

Entry Requirements

You don't need any previous experience or qualifications to enrol in our IGCSE Chemistry course. That's because we believe in making home study - and a rewarding future - as accessible as possible.

Where will I go from here?

Your IGCSE Chemistry qualification will prepare you for further progression in chemistry or for courses which require a knowledge of chemistry.

The IGCSE Chemistry can provide progression to GCE AS and Advanced GCE level, and other equivalent qualifications.

What will I gain?

This course will prepare you to sit the Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry exam

Assessment

ICS Assessment

  • 5 x tutor marked test papers
  • 2 x mock examination papers

External Assessment

  • Exams take place every January and June
  • The final IGCSE exam consists of two written examination papers set and marked by Edexcel
  • Paper 1 - 2 hours
  • Paper 2 - 1 hour

Chemistry - Paper 1

  • This paper will assess biology across all the Assessment Objectives. All the content in this specification which is not in bold will be assessed in Paper 1. The maximum mark for this paper is 120.

Chemistry - Paper 2

  • This paper will assess chemistry across all the Assessment Objectives. The maximum mark for this paper is 60.

There will be a range of compulsory, short-answer structured questions in both papers which are ramped to ensure accessibility for less-able students, as well as to stretch more-able students.

Students may be required to perform calculations, draw graphs and describe, explain and interpret chemical phenomena. Some of the question content will be unfamiliar to students; these questions are designed to assess data-handling skills and the ability to apply chemical principles to unfamiliar situations.

Questions targeted at grades A* - B will include questions designed to test knowledge, understanding and skills at a higher level, including some questions requiring longer prose answers.

What will I get?

Because we're experts in home learning, ICS knows about and offers all the support you need along the way. You'll receive study materials that have been specially designed for distance learning, and have access to tutors both online and over the phone.

You'll also be part of the ICS Online Student Community, where you'll have access to library materials and your account information, as well as vital links with your fellow students.

The Human Biology IGCSE course is designed to prepare students for the Edexcel IGCSE in Chemistry (4CH0) Specification for examinations in June 2012 and later years.

After starting with the basic principles of chemistry, the IGCSE Chemistry course will go on to deal in greater detail with a number of important aspects.

Principles of chemistry

  • You will learn about states of matter - solid, liquid and gas - before learning about atoms and atomic structure. You will learn about relative formula masses and molar volumes of gases, and chemical formulae and chemical equations. The course will go on to teach about ionic compounds, covalent substances, metallic crystals and electrolysis.

Chemistry of the elements

  • You will learn about the Periodic Table and study Group 1 elements - lithium, sodium and potassium - and Group 7 elements - chlorine, bromine and iodine. This section also covers oxygen and oxides, hydrogen and water, the reactivity series and tests for ions and gases.

Organic chemistry

  • The field of organic chemistry will be introduced and you will study the composition and characteristics of alkanes, alkenes and ethanol.

Physical chemistry

  • You will learn about acids, alkalis and salts. The syllabus will also look at energy changes associated with reactions and rates of reaction and equilibria.

Chemistry in society

  • You will learn about the extraction and uses of metals and of crude oil, and the creation of synthetic polymers and the industrial manufacture of chemicals.

You can either pay for your course in full or opt for a monthly payment plan.
