IGCSE Biology

IGCSE Biology

Biology is the study of all living things, from smallest to largest, and is fascinating in its own right. Study of biology can also lead on to a variety of rewarding career paths. It is essential if you want to pursue a career in medicine or as a vet, or to study botany or zoology. The skills you learn through biology courses are also valuable in a number of other careers. The IGCSE Biology course will give you a knowledge and understanding of biological facts, concepts and principles.

The IGCSE Biology course will help you build on your enjoyment of the study of living organisms and learn the importance of accurate experimental work in scientific method and reporting.

You will study the human body as well as the plant and animal kingdoms at every level from microscopic to larger lifeforms.

Through the IGCSE Biology course you will look at the characteristics and variety of living organisms, and at their structures and functions. Reproduction and inheritance will also be studied.

IGCSE Biology also takes a wider perspective and looks at ecology and the environment, and use of biological resources.

Through biology study you will gain a knowledge of biological facts and principles at the same time as developing experimental skills.

Entry Requirements

You don't need any previous experience or qualifications to enrol in our IGCSE Biology course. That's because we believe in making home study - and a rewarding future - as accessible as possible.

Where will I go from here?

The study of biology is essential if you plan a career in medicine or as a veterinarian, but also for a number of other career options. Having an IGCSE Biology also tells a prospective employer you have the useful ability to think analytically and logically.

The IGCSE Biology can also provide progression to GCE AS and Advanced GCE level, and other equivalent qualifications.

What will I gain?

This course will prepare you to sit the Edexcel IGCSE Biology exam

The IGCSE Biology coursework covers a range of topics relating to all types of living organisms and their interrelationships.

Nature and variety of living organisms

  • You will learn the characteristics shared by all living organisms and the features which define the different groups, such as plants, animals, fungi and others.

Structures and functions in living organisms

  • You will learn the basics of cell structure and biological molecules. Nutrition and respiration are described, as are gas exchange, transport and excretion. You will also learn about the issues involved in coordination and response.

Reproduction and inheritance

  • You will learn the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction and look at the different processes in plants and humans. You will also study the process of inheritance and the role of genes, chromosomes and DNA.

Ecology and the environment
